Couples, Marriage & Family Counseling
Graceful Self-Help Counseling provides telehealth psychotherapy for couples, marriages, and adult family relationships.
Relationships can be deeply meaningful, but they can also become stressful, painful, or disconnected over time. Couples and family therapy offers a structured space to slow things down, improve communication, understand patterns, and work toward healthier connection.
Christina F. Reed, M.Ed., MPA, is a Marriage and Family Therapy Associate and provides psychotherapy under clinical supervision.
A Systemic Approach to Relationships
Marriage and family therapy looks beyond the idea that one person is simply "the problem."
Instead, therapy considers the patterns that develop between people, including communication cycles, emotional needs, family history, attachment experiences, boundaries, roles, expectations, and the ways each person's responses can affect the relationship as a whole.
The goal is to better understand what is happening within the relationship and identify opportunities for healthier communication, connection, and change.
Couples & Marriage Counseling
Couples therapy can support partners who are feeling disconnected, caught in repeated conflict, struggling to communicate, or uncertain about how to move forward together.
Sessions may focus on:
- Communication patterns
- Conflict and repair
- Trust and emotional safety
- Attachment needs and emotional disconnection
- Recurring arguments or unresolved issues
- Major life transitions
- Changes in roles or responsibilities
- Rebuilding connection after hurt or distance
- Strengthening emotional intimacy
- Boundary concerns
Couples therapy is not about deciding who is right and who is wrong. The goal is to understand the interaction cycle the relationship has become caught in and help both partners develop healthier ways of responding to one another.
Premarital Counseling
Premarital counseling provides couples with an opportunity to prepare for marriage with greater clarity, communication, and intention.
Topics may include:
- Communication and conflict styles
- Expectations for marriage
- Family-of-origin patterns
- Finances and decision-making
- Faith, values, and shared goals
- Roles and responsibilities
- Boundaries with extended family
- Parenting expectations
- Emotional and physical intimacy
- Future goals and major life decisions
Premarital work can help couples recognize existing strengths, identify potential areas of concern, and begin important conversations before those concerns become larger sources of conflict.
Adult Family Counseling
Family therapy may be helpful when adult family members are struggling with conflict, changing family roles, caregiving responsibilities, grief, addiction within the family system, boundary concerns, or long-standing relationship patterns.
Family work may address:
- Parent and adult-child relationship concerns
- Sibling conflict
- Blended family stress
- Caregiver stress and burnout
- Grief and major family transitions
- The impact of addiction on the family system
- The impact of mental health concerns on family relationships
- Boundary setting
- Communication difficulties
- Long-standing patterns of conflict or disconnection
Family therapy creates space for different perspectives to be heard while helping family members work toward healthier patterns of communication, responsibility, connection, and respect.
What to Expect
Relationship therapy can involve difficult conversations, but the goal is to create a structured environment where those conversations can happen as safely and productively as possible.
- A calm and respectful space for difficult conversations
- Attention to emotional safety
- Exploration of communication and relationship patterns
- Support with slowing down conflict cycles
- Practical tools for communication and repair
- Attention to each person's perspective
- A systemic approach that considers the relationship as a whole
- Clear treatment goals developed collaboratively
